Growing Within the Community

America donors who visited the project.
America donors who visited the project.

Hi to all our wonderful supporters!

Today we went out in search of a new building site to start the creation of a second community centre in Monwabisi Park, Khayelitsha. We have come across a new site that is only used for a couple of days a year and we are now trying to raise funds to purchase this site and start the creation of another new beautiful community center. We were also fortunate to be joined by one of our generous donors, who came along to see the project.

Have a look at the pictures-

Thank you again for your support.

Hi to all our wonderful supporters!

Today we had a meeting with Thabo, David and Joseph from Dazerus House a local NGO who are in partnership with the Indlovu Project to discuss what our next mission will be.  We decided that our next goals will be to install an IT room at the youth center and also get promotional T-Shirts designed for all the children.

The Youth Center has been fully equipped with a pool table, punching bag, sound system and a football table. This allows children in the area to spend their free time in a safe, positive environment.

The food gardens are running beautifully and are creating a much needed food supply.

Thanks again for your generous support.

Do It Day at Indlovu.

Container Gardening

Hi to all our wonderful supporters!

Yesterday was "Do It Day" at Indlovu

The event was a huge successes. Many Volunteers came out to show their support and we got the children from the youth centre involved so that they could a) learn how to plant, b) take care of the gardens and c) harvest the fruits of their labour. Volunteers brought bags of compost, potting soil as well as bags of manure and hand tools to work with.
As you know the soil at Indlovu is just sand so we are initiating container gardening. This will be the best thing to do. The day was amazing and we have now started to implement one of our many ideas for Indlovu.
Items used as containers:

Baskets
Suitcases
Crates
Buckets
Waste bins
Tyres
Pallets (can be stood up and wired together to form a BIG box)
Baby baths
5 litre plastic water bottles
Sacks
Bathtubs
Laundry baskets
Old vibracrete walling is very useful for making large beds

Food planted:

Spinach/swiss chard
cabbage
Brinjals
green peppers
chillies
tomatoes
potatoes (bring all the ones that have sprouted in your veggie rack)
sweet potatoes
granadilla
rosemary
sage
celery
parsley
marigolds
nasturtiums
Butternut
pumpkin
runner beans
carrots
lettuce

Thank you again for your support.

Ecovillage: Uplift 20000 Squatters In South Africa
Related to country: South Africa

Future Donor

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I, Reid Falconer am a grade 10 student at Bishops Diocesan College in Cape Town and I was introduced to the Indlovu Project as a member of my school’s Global Issues Network group. I am committed to making a difference in this very poor community, situated only 20 km from the independent boys school which I attend.

The Indlovu Project is in an informal settlement (squatter camp), in Monwabisi Park, Khayelitsha on the outskirts of Cape Town. In the community surrounding the project unemployment is high, teenage girls fall pregnant in order to access the small monthly government child support, lack of sanitation results in children under the age of five dying from diarrhea, TB and HIV/Aids are rife. The cycle of poverty can only be broken by giving the people of this squatter camp hope for the future – this means providing them with the basics such as food, water and sanitation but also with the means to support themselves through the development of food gardens and skills training. Students need to receive food and support to be able to stay in school and complete their secondary education. Houses need to be built to replace the leaking, cold tin shacks that lack running water and sanitation.

My initial plan looked at developing food gardens for the Indlovu Project and the members of the community in which they are situated. As I got more involved with this project I realized that I needed to take the next step. With the help of the organization, Global Giving I hope to make my vision of turning a squatter camp into an eco-village a reality, as this will ultimately uplift and benefit the 20,000 inhabitants of Monwabisi Park.

I want to make the world a better place and I'm sure you do as well. The World Bank Institute and Global Giving have awarded me the opportunity to earn up to $50 000 for the Indlovu project so here’s a chance for you to donate and ultimately help create an eco-village with HOPE FOR THE FUTURE. If my project raises $3 000 from 50 unique donors in the month of August 2010 I will be awarded an ongoing spot on the website to raise more money for amazing organizations/projects.

You can help me raise money and earn a spot for my ongoing project on GlobalGiving.

1) Pass along this email to your friends and families and ask them to tell others.

2) If you are planning to make a donation this month to Indlovu Project please do so by going to our project on GlobalGiving http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/ecovillage/

Woman's Day at Indlovu

Today was woman's day at the Indlovu Project. The day was aimed at thanking all the wonderful women who have supported the indlovu project with their time, energy and friendship. The celebration was hosted in the new community hall, which has just been constructed with the amazing donations of some donors. Songs, stories, prayers and general joy was shared. Women from all communities of Cape Town joined together and created a magnificent day.
